In your social circle, there are bound to be at least a k pop fan. :) No matter how small the circle is.
I have always wondered why do K pop appeal to so many of us? Even me… who had never (used to) gone crazy over a guy/boy band before, is still deeply stuck in this black hole of kpop.
As you all know, i have always liked to relate everything to design. In this context, i wanted to discuss on how exactly do entertainment companies in korea design their idols to suit the taste of society.
Sorry for being inhuman here, but lets see…lets perceive idols as products ready for sale. They are actually, products for our souls…
What will make you feel attracted to the products?
1) Visual/Packaging?
IN K POP TERMS:
Eg. Girl’s Generation surgery?, Lip syncing the song and focusing on the dances?, guys wearing makeups?…
2) Usability?
IN K POP TERMS:
Eg. Fan service?,Star call?,world tours?…
3) Compatibility to our lives?
IN K POP TERMS:
Eg, Variety shows that show their different skills? gag shows?
Running man?- speed and alertness?
Drama?- Romantic guy or woman? Charismatic guy or woman?
The reason why SM is so so so successful in producing the next big star is that they really understand their target groups.
And they produce and design their idols to suit societys’ tastes…
Using the newest group EXO for example:
For China: EXO-M (Includes 4 chinese members for better communication)
For Korea: EXO-K
If EXO-K were to be a product, under the functionality and user manual list will state those below:
Product contents: D.O, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, Suho, Kai, Sehun
D.O : Visual, Singing, suitable for people that see k pop as a music style.
Baekhyun: Singing, Rapping, Humour, for females who love funny guys with a cute smile.
Chanyeol: Rapping, Visual, for ladies 20+ yet longing for a boyfriend with a cute face looking like a 15 year old,
Suho: Leader…, for ladies who like gentle guys with leadership qualities.
Kai: Dance, visual, for aunties that are still single but still want a cute and young son.
Sehun: ???, for young girls who are maturing too fast due to kpop? Or (Refer to Chanyeol’s case)
Price set by SM are infinite amount of time and screams and money of course. And of cos, SM also offers a loan programme. They can be paid separately through every concert and fan meeting the various idol groups are involved in.
